History

Babs are born from a simple everyday gesture.

During a trip to Copenhagen, a new perception emerged about how domestic space can be experienced — and how the ritual of taking off shoes at the entrance is part of that experience of comfort and presence.

Back in Lisbon, this idea continued to develop: during winter, socks seemed insufficient, but there was also no alternative that combined comfort, functionality, and a contemporary aesthetic.

It was from this contrast between habit and need that the idea for BABS was born.

In 2018, during a sewing course, the first prototype of Babs emerged — inspired by traditional North African babouches and developed from repurposed fabrics. The burlap sacks used to transport coffee beans gave rise to the brand's first collection, Babs Café.

This initial model marked the beginning of an approach to comfort, where functionality, aesthetic sensibility, and intention coexist naturally.

From idea to form

Transforming an initial idea into a product that balances comfort, lightness, and durability required time, research, and continuous refinement.

Throughout the development process, different materials, structures, and specialized suppliers were carefully selected, always with the aim of balancing comfort, lightness, and durability.

Each pair continues to be handmade in limited series, preserving the care, precision, and attention to detail that define BABS.

Cultural inspiration

Between cultures

BABS explores different cultural and textile references throughout its collections — from Japanese, African, Italian, and French fabrics to traditional techniques and materials reinterpreted through a timeless aesthetic.

Each collection is born from the encounter between tradition, aesthetic sensibility, and intention.

Cada par é acompanhado por sementes de pinheiro-manso, criando uma ligação simbólica à natureza e à reflorestação em Portugal.
